The Price of Salt – Patricia Highsmith

Available at Amazon

I read The Price of Salt a long time ago. That is why I tagged it is an ‘oldie’. The tag shows that this is a book that has been written a while ago. But also it is a book I read quite some time ago so I might not remember all the specifics 😉. The one thing I know that these are books I enjoyed and would read again!

The Price of Salt is also known as Carol, like the title of the famous movie with Cate Blanchett and Roony Mara. This is a beautiful, romantic and well-written novel. I would prefer to call it literature instead of lesbian fiction. The story of Therese and Carol falling in love during the 1950’s is a poignant love story. You get sucked in their infatuation in a subtle way. This is one of those books where there are no steamy sex scenes but their romance goes much deeper than that. It is even more thrilling that way. The book was first published in 1952 which makes it as far as I’m concerned part of lesbian history.
