So this book is an odd one out for me. It’s a creepy story that is not very romantic in that sense. But it is about love and that makes Our Wives Under The Sea one of my lesficfavs.

Leah goes on a deep sea mission for an ocean study. Her wife Miri expects her back in 3 weeks. Only Leah stays away for 6 months! When Leah gets back she is not the same. Miri feels that something is wrong with her. And there is definitely something wrong with Leah, and it’s getting worse by the day. Unbeknownst to Miri it’s like she is saying goodbye to Lea ever since she got back, remembering their time together, how they met, dated, made love, joked around, watched movies.

While Miri tries to go on with her life, get a hold of the people Leah worked for, asking for their help, you read Leah’s story and what happened to her on her mission. Julia Armfield does not tell the story of Miri and Leah in a straight forward way. It crept up on me because it was all so strange and ominous what happened and was happening to Leah. And then I read Miri’s story alternating with Leah’s story which was unnerving on it’s own.

Like I said, this is not a book I would normally write about. But Leah and Miri’s story is so original and beautiful, wrapped up in this haunting tale of loss. It’s their love that stayed with me after I finished the book ❤️. And ok, some other scenes as well 😬😱.
