Ask, Tell by E.J. Noyes: A Tale of Forbidden Love

I read Ask, Tell years ago and I loved it. Though it was also heartbreaking, regardless of the happy end 🥰. This book was part of the Ask, Tell series.

So I loved Ask, Tell because it’s a beautiful love story against all odds. Captain Sabine Fleischer is a U.S. Army surgeon deployed to a combat hospital in Afghanistan. It’s a challenge for her working under hard circumstances, the casualties, her relationship with a civilian that’s going south. And there is the military anti-gay policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” which forces her to serve in silence.

And then there is her commanding officer Colonel Rebecca Keane who makes Sabine’s life harder by stealing her heart without even trying. It takes everything she’s got not to give away her feelings for the Colonel. Then Rebecca reveals that she feels the same way. The two women have to be very careful. They cannot show any sign of their mutual attraction, there would be too many repercussions. During a break at home they give in. But how to move forward? It seems impossible! An almost fatal incident, or The Incident as it’s later called (there’s the heartbreaking part 🥺) forces the issue and a decision is made.

Why is this one of my favorites? Because E.J. Noyes is a wonderful writer. The love story is so hard but also very beautiful and undeniable. Sabine is a delight. And there’s Rebecca Keane. She is such a gorgeous character ❤️.
